During the week of July 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident and one was younger than 21.

During the week of July 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident and one was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; Puna, two; North Hilo, South Hilo and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 649 DUI arrests compared with 601 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.

There have been 749 major accidents so far this year compared with 803 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.7 percent.

To date, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities compared with 13 for the same time last year, an increase of 61.5 percent. There also have been four vehicle-related deaths police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and two in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
